Hello,
I'm Babs Hayton I work at Eli Lilly in Speke Liverpool. We are fairly new to the +people program only starting early this year. A few of us attended the coaches forum on Friday 13-AUG-2010 in Manchester. We all really enjoyed it and it was great to meet some other coaches, and to share ideas and experiences.
Thanks,
Babsx

Welcome Murray - good to have you with us.

Enjoyed your company and the rest of the gang at Landmarc North on Tuesday - really appreciated the open interaction - what do they say? "feedback is the breakfast of champions" - the feedback we received from the group was really valuable and taken on board

Cheers

Hi Murray,
Welcome to the forum!
You may remember me from such times as Research at Sterling and Helensburgh. Smiley I hope you're enjoying the program. I remember your enthusiasm from when we met. Good luck at being chosen as a coach, I'm sure you'll give it everything.
Phil

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would introduce myself as I am the new lad on the block.  I'm Murray Graham and I'm just in the middle of the +people programme.  I've just returned from LT3 at the NOVO Hotel in Newcastle.  The company I work with is Landmarc Support Services Ltd and I'm the Range and Training Area Manger for Scotland.  Anyway I hope to get on here as often as possible and hopfully be chosen as a Coach in the next few weeks.

Speak soon guys

hi Spence/Vonnie

Back from hols and really pleaseed to see that you are both using the Forum - thanks

I personally see ethics in the same context as the +people "map" and "territory" - the map represents agreed criteria of integrity and best practice and the teritory is that which we all, as individuals , bring to the party. The blending of the two to create the individual, personal approach encourages a situation whereby ethics get factored in and tested.

If we are precise, in my opinion, there is no such thing as "no personal agenda" with a client/coachee (the I; We; Setters; Client model articulates this)- the term 100% present for the client, to me, demonstrates an absolute belief that recognising the client 100% is bound to create reward/recognition for the coach, not the least personal, self reward/recognition, which then grows confidence and can lead to you being an even better coach. By the same token, any learning/competence can be used/misused in an imbalanced way for personal advantage.

I've gone off on a slight tangent, hopefully related, however returning more specifically to your submission, one of the reasons why I think it is so important to be part of a coaching community (it's a major part of Setters Identity Statement) is that we can check in with each other to ensure that we address ethical issues, like the one you have highlighted, with like minded people - a kind of self regulation.

Cheers

When I speak about using NLP as an negative advantage, I mean used by an unscrupulous person with little thought or feeling for other people. Obviously as occupational coaches, we are chosen and vetted by our companies, and are already thought of as holding high standards of integrity and compassion.
What I meant in the original message was something less sinister though. I was gravitating more to a coach delving into something that the client might agree to,( because let's face it we are pretty amiable but compelling at the same time,) but because we are trusted and more often than not confidants, the client may agree to something that they may not really wish to divulge. So really I just wanted everyone to take a second confirmation of the clients wishes, before we venture into something that may not be totally comfortable for both parties in the long run. As for the ethics surrounding hypnosis, I think this is slightly different, but as I don't know the theoretical psychology behind hypnosis I will have to go away, do some research and think about this one. Ethical philosophy, who'd have thought it eh? lol

The coaching is going fine, I've now made subdivisions of my coaching role so that I can operate without it totally frying my mind. I've found that trying to assimilate all the information that a client and the client's situation throw up can confuse or overshadow certain aspects, so I've tried to seperate the different parts i.e. quality, health and safety etc, in the hope that the conclusions of each problem can then be dealt with as a complete problem.

Hi Spen

I really enjoyed reading this reply.  What is curious to me is that you talk about the ability to change a person's thought processes without them knowing.................... to your advantage.  Surely, the ethical use of NLP is changing someone's thought processes for their benefit?  I have just spent the weekend at an NLP workshop run byTim Halbom (Director of NLP Institue in California), very interesting indeed, lots of work with eye accessing cues - very detailed and also hypnosis.  I wonder what the ethical questions around hypnosis throw up?
